We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Product Owner to lead and manage the continued development of iTraX. This position offers an exciting opportunity to significantly influence global drug discovery practices by enhancing our leading workflow management platform tailored to different R&D applications.

Collaborating closely with cross-functional teams including customers, developers, application scientists, QA, and sales, you will define, prioritise, and deliver product features that meet market demands and customer expectations.

What you'll do:

Working closely with the Head of Product, you will own the day to day management of the iTraX Backlog and Release Cycles, including (but not limited to):

Hybrid remote working.

2 - 3 days office based (The Glasshouse, Alderley Park, SK10 4ZE, UK)

iTraX is our flagship software solution designed specifically to streamline and optimise the scientific research process, enhancing collaboration and efficiency across drug discovery workflows. It supports teams in managing complex R&D workflows within drug discovery and development, allowing seamless integration and visibility of outsourced tasks, improving decision-making, and accelerating project timelines.

Ticket Creation & Refinement: Work with the various teams and stakeholders to create and/or refine tickets for the main streams of work (Customer Projects, Product Roadmap, Small Change and Support). Translate high-level concepts into detailed user stories and acceptance criteria, ensuring clarity for development teams, QA and other stakeholders
Release Cycle Management: Prioritise and plan the current and upcoming Release Cycles based on agreed priorities, balancing business value, technical feasibility, and resource capacity. Own and lead the various agile ceremonies, including (but not limited to) - Stand-ups, Refinement sessions, Retrospectives, Kick-off, etc.
Quality Assurance: Collaborate with QA to uphold high product quality standards, participating in testing and validation processes.
Continuous Improvement: Help foster a culture of continuous improvement, collaborating on ways to improve the Product and Delivery Processes.
Facilitate Feature & Technical Discussions: Drawing together the right stakeholders (for example Application Scientists, Customers, internal and external Technical experts, etc.) and ensuring that feature and / or technical requests are discussed, understood and documented.
Documentation & Training: Work with Application Scientists to create engaging materials such as presentations, white papers, and videos showcasing iTraX’s capabilities in solving drug discovery challenges.
Market Analysis: Assist the Head of Product (and other Stakeholders) with Market, Customers research for industry trends and competitor analysis to inform product direction, any product gaps and identify innovation opportunities.

What we're looking for:

Essential Knowledge:

Previous experience in a similar strategic product role(s), preferably with B2B enterprise cloud/SaaS products.
Thorough knowledge of software development practices and agile methodologies (especially Kanban and Scrum).

Essential Skills:

Advanced prioritisation and resource-balancing capabilities.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for effective collaboration with technical teams and stakeholders.
Expert presentation skills, comfortable engaging diverse audiences both in-person and remotely.
Advanced teamwork and self-motivation capabilities.

Experience:

A minimum of 2 to 3 years of proven experience as a Product Owner or similar role within software or life sciences industries.

Desirable knowledge and skills:

Significant knowledge of drug discovery processes and of the pharmaceutical/biotech
industry.
Formal Product Owner qualification or certification.
Background / previous experience as a Business Analyst or similar.
Background / previous experience as a Delivery Lead, Scrum Master or similar.

Experience with iTraX or equivalent scientific, cloud, workflow management or informatics platforms.

In laboratories around the world, the way science gets done is changing fast. It’s no longer just about better instruments, faster automation, or generating more data.

The real shift is happening at a deeper level: how data, workflows, systems and intelligence come together to shape discovery itself.

As Lab of the Future programmes gain momentum - from global initiatives like PRISME to major industry gatherings such as Lab of the Future USA - one thing is becoming increasingly clear. The Lab of the Future isn’t defined by any single technology. It’s defined by how everything works together.

What Do We Really Mean by “Lab of the Future”?

The Lab of the Future is often described as automated, digital or AI-enabled. All of those are true, but on their own they’re incomplete.

At its heart, the Lab of the Future is a connected environment where data flows smoothly from experimental design, through execution and analysis, into decision-making. It’s a place where scientists spend less time managing tools and chasing updates, and more time doing science.

Insight isn’t something assembled later in reports or slide decks. It emerges naturally as work progresses. Getting there requires a shift away from isolated systems and manual hand-offs, toward a shared digital backbone - one that connects people, instruments and software into a single, working environment.

Connectivity Alone Isn’t Enough

Most modern labs already generate huge volumes of digital data. Instruments are increasingly connected and many organisations have invested heavily in ELNs, LIMS and data platforms. Yet fragmentation remains one of the biggest barriers to progress.

Data still lives in silos, context is lost between systems and workflows are stitched together using email, spreadsheets and meetings. Decisions are slowed down not because information doesn’t exist, but because it’s hard to interpret, trust and act on.

True digital connectivity goes beyond integration for integration’s sake. It means data is captured once, enriched with scientific context, and made available wherever it’s needed. It means experiments can be followed end to end - not just within individual tools - and teams across disciplines can work from a shared understanding of what’s happening and why.

Automation Helps Until It Gets Complicated

Automation and robotics are already transforming laboratory operations. Liquid handling, sample tracking and automated scheduling have removed large amounts of repetitive manual work. But automation alone doesn’t solve the coordination problem.

As labs automate more steps, workflows often become more complex, not less. Multiple systems need to act in sequence, exceptions need to be managed, priorities change and experiments evolve as results come in. Without orchestration, automation risks becoming just another layer of complexity.

What’s increasingly needed is a way to coordinate work across systems - ensuring the right actions happen at the right time, and providing clear, real-time visibility into what’s running, what’s complete and what needs attention.

Where AI Fits - and Where It Doesn’t

Artificial intelligence features heavily in Lab of the Future conversations and for good reason. But AI only delivers real value when the foundations are in place.

AI depends on high-quality, well-contextualised data. It needs to understand not just results, but experimental intent, conditions, decisions and outcomes. Without that context, even the most advanced models struggle to produce meaningful insight.

When those foundations do exist, AI becomes genuinely transformative. It can highlight patterns across experiments, suggest next-best actions, optimise workflows and help scientists explore a much wider experimental space.

This is where the idea of agentic AI begins to emerge. Not AI as a standalone analytics tool, but intelligence embedded directly into workflows. Systems that can observe what’s happening, reason over data and context, and suggest or take action within defined boundaries. In effect, intelligent digital lab partners that support human decision-making rather than replace it.

Where iTraX Fits Into the Lab of the Future

As laboratories become more connected and data-rich, one challenge comes up again and again - turning all of that activity into something scientists can actually use.

Data is everywhere - in instruments, ELNs, LIMS, spreadsheets and emails - but it’s rarely all in one place. Understanding what’s happening across an experiment, a project or a portfolio often still means chasing updates, pulling reports together and filling in gaps by hand.

As the year comes to a close, I’ve taken a moment to reflect on what has been one of Elixir’s most meaningful chapters so far. We move fast, and it’s easy to overlook how far we’ve come, but I feel incredibly proud of this team and everything we’ve achieved together.

2025 was a year of strong commercial growth for Elixir. We broadened our global footprint, strengthened relationships with long-standing customers, and saw increasing adoption across our product lines - reflecting both the maturity of our platforms and the trust the scientific community places in us.

Scientific organisations continue to face pressure to accelerate discovery while managing complex data and operational demands. This is exactly where Elixir is focused. Across global R&D, our products continue to make a measurable impact, with iTraX Analytical Chemistry featured at leading scientific conferences through customer-led presentations on how it is helping streamline real workflows.

From a product perspective, we made meaningful advances. iTraX saw improvements in interoperability, user experience and platform scalability. Our Chemistry platform - the first scientific tracking solution of its kind and now entering its fourteenth year - continued to evolve with enhancements that strengthen its position as a trusted, mature product. We also saw growing uptake in Study Management as organisations look for more integrated, data-driven scientific operations.

We continued to expand our commercial capabilities and earned trust from customers who tell us that Elixir now feels like part of their internal team - a compliment we never take for granted. We also deepened alignment with key technology partners to ensure iTraX fits seamlessly into the environments shaping modern R&D.

Looking ahead, we are increasing our capabilities in AI. A highlight this year was our invitation to PRISME, whose vision for the Software-Defined Lab aligns closely with ours. It reaffirmed our long-standing mission - creating more time for science so teams can explore, innovate and deliver life-changing medicines faster.

Above all, this year underscored the people, expertise and purpose that sit at the centre of Elixir’s success.

We move into 2026 with confidence and momentum - and there is so much more ahead.

In our first article, we laid out why we’re writing this series—to explore the challenges of modernizing scientific software infrastructure and to share the solutions we’re adopting. Scientific research depends on efficiency and reliability, yet many organizations still rely on outdated, manual deployment processes. At Elixir Software, we’re evolving our approach to keep pace with growing demands.

If you’ve ever built software for scientific research, you already know one universal truth: what starts as a simple, elegant solution eventually turns into a sprawling, interconnected system. In the early days of Elixir Software, our deployment needs were straightforward. We had a single product, a small number of deployments, and a manageable infrastructure.

Fast forward to today and things look very different, as the number of iTraX deployments has rapidly expanded. Our product suite has evolved from a single workflow configuration of iTraX to over six key industry-standard workflows, each with its own complexities. Meanwhile, our cloud team remains lean, which, while efficient, also requires careful strategy and automation to scale effectively.

This is the natural progression of a growing scientific SaaS business, and we are actively adapting to meet these new demands.

We are leveraging industry-leading tools to transform our deployment process:

Kubernetes
The foundation of our new infrastructure, providing automatic scaling, self-healing, and declarative configuration.

Crossplane
A Kubernetes-based infrastructure automation tool that allows us to manage multi-cloud environments seamlessly.

ArgoCD
A GitOps solution that ensures our deployments are fully automated and always in sync with version control.

Observability Tooling
There are many new tools available to improve the information delivered to developers and operators to help them perform their jobs. We will take a look at some of the foundational tools in the observability space, such as OpenTelemetry, Grafana, Prometheus, and Loki.

Developer Portal
To improve visibility into deployments and allow non-technical users to manage certain platform aspects. We are still looking at solutions that deliver this and will include our findings in a later part of this series.

AI Agents
The rapid pace of change in AI tooling is one of the biggest challenges and opportunities facing all branches of development, and infrastructure is no different. As we adopt AI tooling we will document the process here.

These aren’t just buzzwords—they’re the key components that allow us to scale without adding unnecessary complexity.

The Challenges of Growth

As we scale, we face new technical and operational considerations. What worked in the past needs to evolve to meet increasing demands. Here’s what we’re adapting to:

Scaling deployments efficiently
With deployments increasing exponentially, manual execution is no longer viable. We need automation to ensure reliability and speed.

Managing increased complexity
Our system must be flexible and modular, allowing seamless configuration of new deployments and workflows.

Ensuring system resilience
We need self-healing mechanisms to automatically detect and resolve failures, reducing reliance on manual intervention.

Streamlining customer rollouts
Updates should be deployed seamlessly, ensuring our customers receive improvements in a controlled and efficient manner.

Optimizing cloud infrastructure
Expanding beyond a single provider ensures that we can optimize for cost, performance, and availability.

By focusing on these areas, we are not just solving problems—we are future-proofing our infrastructure for continued success.

A truly scalable deployment pipeline should:

Make Git the Source of Truth
Deployments should be automated and reflect what’s in version control, eliminating manual intervention.

Enable Blue/Green Deployments
We should be able to deploy new versions of our software without taking down the current version, ensuring that unhealthy containers never replace healthy ones.

Introduce Self-Healing Mechanisms
If an application container or cloud resource fails, it should be identified and replaced automatically — without an engineer needing to step in.

Automate Migrations
Database migrations and configuration changes should be atomic, idempotent, and fully automated.

Expand Multi-Cloud Capabilities
Deploying across multiple cloud providers allows us to balance cost, performance, and availability.

In our previous article, we discussed the challenges of scaling our scientific SaaS platform and how we’re evolving our infrastructure to meet growing demands. One of the key technologies enabling this transformation is Kubernetes (k8s)—a powerful system that helps us automate, scale, and manage our deployments more efficiently.

For a scientific workflow platform like ours, where iTraX are deployed across multiple cloud environments, we need an infrastructure that is both resilient and flexible. Kubernetes gives us exactly that, acting as the control hub that keeps everything running smoothly, automatically adapting to demand, and ensuring our software is highly available.

Our infrastructure is structured to maximize isolation, security, and efficiency, with Kubernetes playing a pivotal role:

01: A Master Kubernetes Deployment:
This oversees and manages all other deployments, hosting core services like:

ArgoCD
Ensuring deployments are in sync with our Git repositories

Automating the provisioning of customer environments across cloud platforms.

Why Kubernetes?

At its core, Kubernetes allows us to orchestrate and manage containers—small, isolated environments that run our applications. Instead of manually provisioning and maintaining services, Kubernetes automates the process, reducing complexity and improving reliability.

Here’s why we chose Kubernetes as the foundation of our next-generation deployment pipeline:

Portability across cloud providers
Our goal is to keep our infrastructure as cloud-agnostic as possible. Rather than relying on proprietary cloud services like AWS SQS (which isn't available on other hyperscalers), Kubernetes ensures we can move our workloads between providers like AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud with minimal effort.
Self-healing & resilience
Kubernetes continuously monitors our applications. If a container crashes, Kubernetes automatically replaces it, ensuring minimal downtime and a seamless experience for our users.
Scalability on demand
Scientific workloads can be unpredictable. Kubernetes enables autoscaling, meaning we can add or remove computing resources automatically based on real-time demand. Whether we need to handle a surge in computational tasks or optimize costs during off-peak hours, Kubernetes does the heavy lifting.
Declarative & automated infrastructure
Everything in Kubernetes is defined as code, meaning our infrastructure is reproducible, consistent, and version-controlled. This fits perfectly into our GitOps approach, where all deployments are automated based on changes in a Git repository.

Kubernetes works on a simple but powerful principle: it constantly compares the current state of the system with the desired state and makes corrections as needed. This means if something goes wrong—such as a failing container or a missing dependency—Kubernetes detects the issue and corrects it automatically.

By extending Kubernetes with additional tools, we can further enhance automation and optimize deployments. Some key extensions include:

Karpenter & KEDA
Dynamically scale resources based on workload demands.
ArgoCD
Automate deployments using GitOps, ensuring infrastructure is always in sync with code.
Crossplane
Extend Kubernetes to provision cloud infrastructure, managing databases, networking, and security seamlessly.

Create and enforce policies to ensure that any resources that are deployed follow best practices.

Issues may and do arise from keeping track of the target status, changes in the target priority, and other synthetic queue modifications.In common with many growing biotech companies, a Boston-based biotech augments its in-house chemistry team with tens of synthetic chemists from multiple CRO partners. While this enables the company to significantly increase its capacity, it also brings the challenge of coordinating work between multiple organizations around the globe.

Molecule design, review, prioritization, resource allocation and synthesis scheduling are separate parts of a complex process that can lead to productivity bottlenecks and slow the drug discovery process. Cambridge, UK – 22 April 2020 – Torx Software announces the launch of Torx, a new web-based platform for small molecule discovery chemistry. Torx enables chemists to work together, share ideas, manage resources and track progress in the Design-Make-Test-Analyze (DMTA) workflow.

Molecule design, review, prioritization, resource allocation and synthesis scheduling are separate parts of a complex process that can lead to productivity bottlenecks and slow the drug discovery process. Torx deploys dedicated applications within medicinal chemistry workflows to reimagine the end-to-end process and create a team-friendly, productivity-centric approach. Coupled with enabling research managers to manage synthesis resourcing and prioritization, Torx can reduce time to quality candidate selection by working through DMTA cycles faster and more efficiently.

July 2020 sees the launch of a brand new responsive, mobile-ready website for Elixir Software, putting more information about our tracking and collaboration software in the palm of your hand.

Designed and developed once again by Cheshire-based full service creative agency Dzinr , the website’s customer journey emulates the simple and intuitive user interfaces of iTraX, Elixir’s tracking board and team collaboration workflow software. The project follows on from Dzinr’s creation of Elixir’s previous website, new concept infographics, presentation and brochureware assets.

iTraX Simplifies Outsourcing of Pre-clinical Safety Studies for AstraZeneca

Elixir attending STP 35th Annual Symposium

Viewing pathology and toxicology contributions to project portfolios, and co-ordinating these activities for successful delivery meets a very generic problem across the Life Science industry. Moreover, iTraX appears to meet this need very successfully!

So, Elixir are stepping out this month to attend the STP 35th Annual Symposium (June 26-30) in sunny San Diego! In addition to taking in the sights, we will be ‘floor-walking’ the STP events and exhibitions, and talking with prospective customers interested in managing toxicology and pathology work more effectively and make more time for their science. We will also be demonstrating how work can be effectively set up and managed with CRO partners without compromise to information security.
